For Your Self: Expanding Access to Mental Health Care for Teenagers
Date
April 2023
Problem Statement
We recognized that teens and young adults under 19 often struggle to access the mental health care they need due to a variety of obstacles, such as stigma and limited resources. Our goal with our product was to provide a platform that could educate this demographic on the various options available to them and connect them with qualified experts who could help them navigate their mental health journey.

Goals
We want to advocate for teens with depression or emotional disturbance from their homes. We want to aim to understand how they deal with mental illness and what steps they would take to alert someone or a professional.
The app’s overall goal is to connect adolescents to a therapist, create a safe environment for individuals to have open conversations, and raise awareness of mental health care early within the education system.
Our overall concept stems from an apparent desperate need to give youth aged 12-19 access to mental health resources. More than a third of students surveyed responded that they don’t feel like they have an adult they can go to for help. More than a third of respondents said they would just Google for assistance in finding mental health resources, rather than go to someone personally they know. About one quarter of students said that one major roadblock for them seeking therapy is that they doubt it would help them at all.
